AfIGF 2022 Call for Workshop Proposals

The 10th meeting of the African Internet Governance Forum will be held virtually from 14-16 December 2021. The theme is “Advancing digital transformation in Africa in the face of Crisis”. The thematic sessions are aligned to the foundational areas outlined in Digital Transformation Strategy for Africa 2020-2030 (DTS) whose overall objective is to harness digital technologies and innovation to transform societies and economies to promote Africa's integration, generate inclusive economic growth, stimulate job creation, break the digital divide, and eradicate poverty for the continent’s socio-economic development. The Government of Chad has graciously agreed to host the 2019 Meeting of the African Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF-VIII). It will be held in N'Djamena from 10-12 September 2019.

Award in recognition of Internet development

The African IGF ended on 12th September in Ndjamena, Chad with an award ceremony by the African Union, the UN Economic Commission for Africa and the Government of Chad to recognize the contribution in Internet development of:

- Ridha Guellouz of Tunisia. He has proposed in 1998 at the Indianapolis ITU Plenipotentiaries Conference convening of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). Since then he has been at the forefront of WSIS and IGF worldwide and in Africa and the Arab world.

- Makane Faye, retired staff of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa & Moctar Yedaly of the African Union. They have established the African Internet Governance Forum and have been running it successfully since its inception despite all odds. Moreover they have strengthened existing partnerships and enlisted new partners and more African countries and RECs in the Internet governance process.

Le Forum africain sur la gouvernance de l'Internet s’est terminé le 12 septembre a Ndjamena par une cérémonie de remise de prix de l’Union Africaine, de la Commission économique des Nations Unies pour l’Afrique et du Gouvernement tchadien pour la contribution au développement d’Internet à :

- Ridha Guellouz de Tunisie. Il a proposé en 1998 à la Conférence des plénipotentiaires de l'UIT à Indianapolis de convoquer le Sommet mondial sur la société de l'information (SMSI). Depuis lors, il est à l'avant-garde du SMSI et du FGI dans le monde, en Afrique et dans les pays arabes.

- Makane Faye, retraité de la Commission économique des Nations Unies pour l'Afrique et Moctar Yedaly de l'Union Africaine. Ils ont mis en place le Forum africain sur la gouvernance de l’Internet et le coordonnent avec succès depuis sa création, malgré les appréhensions de toutes sortes des uns et des autres. En outre, ils ont renforcé les partenariats existants et emmené de nouveaux partenaires et plus de pays africains et de CERs dans le processus de gouvernance de l'Internet.

African Internet Exchange System (AXIS)

The African Internet Exchange System project aims to keep Africa’s internet traffic local by providing capacity building & technical assistance to facilitate the establishment of Internet Exchange Points and Regional Internet Exchange Points in Africa. Having regard to relevant AU decisions related to the African Internet Exchange System project, the African Union Commission signed an agreement with the Lead Financier (Luxembourg Development Agency) to support implementation of the African Internet Exchange System project funded by the EU-Africa Infrastructure Trust Fund and the Government of Luxembourg.

Welcome to the African Internet Governance Forum

The African Internet Governance space has gone through different phases through the WSIS process with regional meetings held from 2002 to 2005 in Bamako, Accra, Addis Ababa, Cairo, Johannesburg, Douala and Tunis. Within the global IGF initiative, Africa has hosted IGF in Egypt (2009) and in Kenya (2011).
